What are unconfirmed subscribers?

Updated over 6 months ago

Unconfirmed subscribers are email addresses who sign up on a form with double opt-in enabled but haven’t confirmed their subscription to your newsletter yet.

Double opt-in not only improves compliance with anti-spam laws but also enhances the quality of your mailing list by ensuring that only genuinely interested recipients are included.

How unconfirmed subscribers confirm their subscription

If you have double opt-in enabled for any of your forms, users will have to confirm their subscription after signing up. See How to use double opt-in when collecting subscribers for more information.

To improve confirmation rates, ensure that the thank-you page after form submission provides clear instructions for checking the confirmation email and completing the process.

A confirmation email, which you can edit under the form’s Double opt-in tab, is sent. Here, they have to click the confirmation button to confirm their subscription to your newsletter.

Additionally, you can customize the confirmation email message in the Double Opt-In tab to better align with your campaign goals and provide a personalized touch.

Until subscription is confirmed, these emails are considered unconfirmed subscribers. They cannot receive any of your newsletters because they haven't yet confirmed their subscription. Only active subscribers can receive your newsletters.

Furthermore, contacting unconfirmed subscribers directly or sending automated reminders is not allowed, ensuring compliance with anti-spam policies.

Where to find your unconfirmed subscribers list

Unconfirmed subscribers are added to your Unconfirmed list, which you can find on the Subscribers page by clicking on the first dropdown menu next to Active subscribers.

How to set unconfirmed subscribers as active subscribers

It is possible to set unconfirmed subscribers as active only if you have their permission to do so. Setting them as active without them confirming beforehand is not allowed under any circumstance and is a violation of our Anti-Spam Policy.

To set unconfirmed subscribers as active subscribers:

  1. Head to the Subscribers page.

  2. Click on the Active subscribers dropdown menu and select Unconfirmed from the list.

  3. Select the unconfirmed subscriber(s).

  4. Click Actions.

  5. Select Move to active.

You can also set them as active directly from their profile page:

  1. Search for the unconfirmed subscriber’s email on the Subscribers page.

  2. Click on their email address to be taken to their profile page.

  3. Click on Actions.

  4. Select Subscribe.

Improving Confirmation Rates

Strategies for encouraging higher confirmation rates among subscribers include:

  1. Clear Post-Signup Messaging: Ensure thank-you pages or confirmation instructions clearly outline the next steps for subscribers.

  2. Localized Instructions: Display prominently on forms to ensure users understand the process in their language.

  3. Consistent Double Opt-In Use: Maintain DOI to filter fake or incorrect addresses while ensuring legitimate sign-ups.
